Les Balsaminaceae sont une famille de herbes avec feuilles alternes, simples, sans estípulas. Fleurest hermafroditas, cigomorfas, conspicuas, solitaires ou en recimos; cáliz avec 3 ou rarement 5 sachez-les, le posterior espolonado; corola avec 5 pétalos normalement réduite à 3 pièces par union des paires latérales; androceo avec 5 estambres alternipétalos et avec anteras conniventes; gineceo súpero. Fruits en cápsula loculicida. Quelques 500 espèces des pays cálidos et tempérés.
