Philip José Farmer

Philip José Farmer (North Terre Haute, Indiana, 26 janvier de 1918- Peoria, Illinois, 25 février de 2009) a été un écrivain américain de science fiction et fantaisie, auteur de romans et récits brefs.

La science fiction de Philip José Farmer

En beaucoup de de les oeuvres de Farmer apparaissent des personnages preexistentes, pris de l'histoire ou de la fiction. Il est le cas de The Other Log of Phileas Fogg (1973), que remplit les elipsis du connu roman Le tour au monde en quatre-vingt jours, de Juillet Verne, ou de À Barnstormer in Oz (1982), dans celui qui le fils adulte de la protagoniste de Le mago d'Oz, Dorothy, arrive au pays d'Oz par un accident de l'avion qu'était pilotando. Autres personnages qui apparaissent fréquemment dans ses oeuvres sont les héros pulp Tarzán et Doc Savage: dans le roman The Adventure of the Peerless Peer Tarzán forme équipe avec Sherlock Holmes. Farmer Est aussi le créateur des séries de Lord Grandrith et Doc Caliban, personnages basés, respectivement, en Tarzán et en Doc Savage. Cette série se compose de À Feast Unknown (1969), Lord of the Trees (1970) et The Mad Goblin (1970). Farmer A en plus écrit deux ingénieuses biographies de Tarzán et Doc Savage, Tarzan Alive (1972) et Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life (1973).

Il la série Monde de la Rivière (Riverworld) raconte les aventures de personnages tellement différents entre soi comme Richard Francis Burton, Hermann Göring et Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) en un bizarre au-delà en lequel tous les êtres humains qu'ont habité dans le passé ils ressuscitent dans la vallée d'une rivière que s'étend par toute une planète. La saga est composée par À vos corps dispersos (To Your Scattered Bodies Go, 1971); Le fabuleux bateau fluvial (The Fabulous Riverboat, 1971); L'obscur designio (The Dark Design, 1977); Le labyrinthe magique (The Magic Labyrinth, 1980); et Dieux du Monde de la Rivière (Gods of Riverworld, 1983). Riverworld and Other Stories (1979) Est une collection de récits qu'il se développe dans le même monde imaginaire; en elle se comprend le conte qu'il a donné origine à la saga. La série World of Tiers figure des romans The Maker of Universes (1965), The Gates of Creation (1966), À Private Cosmos (1968), Behind the Walls of Terra (1970), The Lavalite World (1977) et More Than Fire (1993). Cette série, basée sur l'idée d'un univers parallèle, a inspiré à Roger Zelazny sa série d'Amber. Farmer A écrit le Vénus on the Half-Shell (1975) avec le pseudonyme de Kilgore Trout, un écrivain fictif qui apparaît dans les romans de Kurt Vonnegut.

Les oeuvres de Farmer abordent souvent le thème du sexe: son résumé d'histoires brèves Strange Relations, de 1960, a marqué une borne dans l'histoire du sexe dans la littérature de science fiction. Aussi la religion est présente dans le travail de Farmer: Jesús apparaît comme personnage en un des récits de Riverworld and Other Stories et dans le roman Jesus on Mars.
