The Chieftains Est une bande irlandaise de musique traditionnelle, fondée en 1963, an de l'enregistrement de son premier LP intitulé simplement The Chieftains. Sa composition initiale a été Paddy Moloney (gaita irlandaise), Martin Fay (violon et os, instrument de percussion traditionnelle), Seán Potts (whistle) et David Fallon (bodhrán). Tous ils étaient des musiciens originaires de Ceoltóirí Cualann, l'orchestre de Seán Ou'Ríada et de la scène de pubs de Dublin. Le succès de la formation exclusivement instrumentale a été une surprise, puisque la émergente scène folk irlandaise se nourrissait principalement de les apportes que les chanteurs de groupes comme The Dubliners ou The Clancy Brothers réalisaient.

La formation a publié son deuxième disque, The Chieftains 2, en 1969 avec quelques changements: Seán Keane s'a incorporé comme violinista et Peadar Mercier a remplacé à David Fallon en le bodhrán. L'an 1971, en que son troisième disque The Chieftains 3 est sorti au marché a supposé le despegue de la bande et la reconnaissance à son style, fortement traditionnel mais avec des innovations enriquecedoras. La bande a touché par première fois aux États-Unis de l'Amérique en 1972, à ce que ils ont suivi diverse tournées en 1973 et 1974.

Ses composants: Seán Keane, Martín Fay, Derek Bell, Matt Molloy, Kevin Conneff et Paddy Moloney ont réalisé dans le groupe trente-trois enregistrements, à part des réalisées par chacun par séparé. Le groupe a aussi réalisé des projets pour revitalizar le folklore Irlandais bien que dernièrement le groupe a essayé porter sa musique vers une fusion avec la musique d'autres artistes comme ils peuvent être The Corrs, Mark Knopfler, Mick Jagger, Sting, Carlos Núñez, Sinéad Ou'Connor, Kepa Junkera ou Ry Cooder. Divers de ses travaux ses plus importants sont "An irish Evening", "The celtic harp", "The long black veil" et "Santiago".
